As a costume designer, there are few things more rewarding than bringing characters to life through the art of wardrobe. When I was approached to work on the latest adaptation of Daphne du Maurier’s novel ‘Rebecca’, I knew it was a project I couldn’t pass up.

My name is Maia Herzog-Lee, and I had the privilege of designing the costumes for this visually stunning film. In this article, I will take you behind the scenes and give you an in-depth look at the thought process and inspiration behind the costumes for ‘Rebecca’.

‘Rebecca’ is a classic novel that has been adapted for the screen multiple times, but this latest version presented a unique challenge. Set in the 1930s, the film follows the story of a young bride who becomes haunted by the shadows of her husband’s first wife, Rebecca. The costumes had to not only reflect the time period but also convey the emotional depth of the characters.

One of the main characters in the film is Mrs. Danvers, the sinister housekeeper who is fiercely loyal to the memory of Rebecca. For Mrs. Danvers, I wanted to create a costume that exuded elegance and authority but also had a hint of darkness and mystery. I chose deep, rich colors like black and dark green, and incorporated flowing fabrics and intricate details to give her a sense of power and control.

On the other end of the spectrum is the protagonist, the young bride. Her costumes needed to reflect her innocence and vulnerability, as well as her transformation throughout the film. I chose soft, pastel colors like blush pink and light blue for her early costumes, and gradually transitioned to darker, more mature colors as she gains confidence and strength.

One of the most challenging aspects of this project was creating the costumes for the character of Rebecca herself. Even though she is never physically present in the film, her presence looms large over the story. I wanted her costumes to be ethereal and otherworldly, almost like a ghostly apparition. I used sheer fabrics and delicate embellishments to give her costumes a sense of ephemeral beauty.

In addition to the main characters, I also had the opportunity to design costumes for the supporting cast, including the guests at the lavish parties and the staff at the grand estate. Each costume had to be meticulously researched and crafted to ensure authenticity and accuracy.

One of the most rewarding parts of working on ‘Rebecca’ was collaborating with the talented hair and makeup team to create a cohesive look for each character. We worked closely together to ensure that every detail, from the hairstyles to the accessories, complemented the costumes and helped bring the characters to life on screen.

Overall, designing the costumes for ‘Rebecca’ was a labor of love. It was a true collaboration between the director, the actors, and the entire creative team. I am incredibly proud of the final result and cannot wait for audiences to see the film and experience the world we have created.

Thank you for joining me on this journey behind the scenes of ‘Rebecca’. I hope you have gained a deeper appreciation for the art of costume design and the impact it can have on a film. I look forward to sharing more of my work with you in the future. Until then, happy watching!
